The Path Ahead: Spirituality & Purpose in Later Life℠ is a curriculum on the spirituality of aging that combines guided discussion with contemplative practices to reframe aging for persons of faith. Over six sessions, participants grapple with ageism, identify changing spiritual needs, equip themselves with new prayer practices, and engage in discernment about God’s continuing call. Rejecting stereotypical views of aging that define it in terms of a singular narrative of decline, The Path Ahead: Spirituality & Purpose in Later Life℠ instead reveals this season of life as a time of spiritual growth and pursuit of purpose. Employing video presentations, directed discussion, contemplative practices, and the arts, The Path Ahead: Spirituality & Purpose in Later Life℠ encourages connection, builds community, and promotes wellbeing.

The purpose of this four-session workshop is to train facilitators who will offer The Path Ahead: Spirituality & Purpose in Later Life℠ in their own congregation or faith community. In this immersive workshop, participants will be introduced to the content, structure, and pedagogy of the series. They will also experience many of the curriculum’s activities and prayer practices. No expertise in gerontology or theology is required; brief background readings and a “teaching narrative” for each session are included. Registration includes a digital copy of the Curriculum & Resource Guide for use in facilitating the series. Designed for co-facilitation; assemble a team of two or three and remind the members to register by the deadline.

NOTE: The Path Ahead curriculum (\"TPAC\") is protected by copyright and your rights to use TPAC are under license. At the start of the course, you will enter into a licensing agreement. Your TPAC license grants you permission to facilitate the TPAC with a group or groups of end users (“Participants”). Your TPAC license (to use the TPAC materials and to lead TPAC classes) will remain in effect for three years.

NOTE: This training is intended for members of congregations who wish to offer The Path Ahead: Spirituality & Purpose in Later Life℠ within their own congregation, or in collaboration with another congregation. You will indicate your congregation or collaboration on the registration form.

Rev. Dr. Sarah Moses is an ordained Episcopal priest and author of Ethics and the Elderly (Orbis Books, 2015). She received a PhD in theological ethics from Boston College and taught for 13 years in the Department of Philosophy & Religion at the University of Mississippi. She currently serves as chaplain and religion faculty at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School in Alexandria, VA, where she lives with her husband and two children. Sarah brings extensive experience teaching parish adult formation classes, as well as twenty-plus years ministering with older adults through the ecumenical organization The Community of Sant'Egidio. She also serves on the Congregational Resources Advisory Council of Seabury Resources for Aging (Washington D.C.).

Elizabeth B. Boyd, Ph.D. is an author and educator with experience teaching lifelong learners as well as university students of all ages. As Director of Community Outreach and Education at Seabury Resources for Aging®, in Washington, DC, she partners with congregations to address the issues of aging and to support work by and with older people. She is co-author of The Path Ahead: Spirituality & Purpose in Later Life℠, and project lead for Common Threads: An Intergenerational Worship Series. She delights in reframing aging for persons of faith. An interdisciplinary scholar by training, she has more than a decade of university-level teaching experience, including at Vanderbilt University and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of Southern Beauty: Race, Ritual, and Memory in the Modern South (University of Georgia Press, 2022). A lifelong Episcopalian, she lives in Takoma Park, Maryland.

The Rev. Susan Walker, M.A., M.T.S., is a deacon in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, called to serve persons on the margins of life. Until retirement last year, she served an affordable housing community for older adults in Washington. Her studies in the process of aging and spirituality led to her collaboration with Elizabeth Boyd at Seabury Resources for Aging and the resulting curriculum, The Path Ahead, which explores issues of aging while addressing the spiritual needs of persons in their later years. Susan is a trained spiritual director, retreat leader, and teacher of contemplative prayer practices. During the pandemic she began an online Christian meditation group which continues to meet weekly.
